Article 31 (1) of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) reads “States Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts”. To restore the children’s Right to Play and reintroduce them the Tamil Traditional Games on 10th September 2023 we organized an event titled ‘Fun with Traditional Games’ at the Madura College playgrounds as part of Sakthi – Vidiyal’s 30th Anniversary Celebrations. In this event we taught 50 traditional games to children which include categories like Individual games, Team games, Indoor games and Outdoor games. Children were divided into five age groups including Beginner, Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior and about 400 children belonging to the Vidiyal Child Rights Movement enjoyed participating in these traditional games. The event began at 10.00 am with the Movement Song of Vidiyal Child Rights Movement. It looked like a fun filled play festival with a number of stalls and playgrounds with children playing traditional games. Until the closure of the event at 5.00 pm, children participated with lots of enthusiasm and learnt virtues such as cooperation, team spirit, attitude towards accepting success and failures equally and friendliness.
